What is Race Discrimination?

Race discrimination is a type of discrimination that occurs when employers exercise bias toward an employee due to his/her race, color, ethnicity or national origin.  Anytime an employer or company makes decisions related to hiring, firing, demoting or compensation based upon an employee’s ethnicity or skin color, they are participating in race discrimination.  Additionally, if employers treat an employee differently or unequally because of his/her ethnic background, it is considered race discrimination. 

According to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, employers must not discriminate against employees based upon their race, color, ethnicity or national origin.  If employers partake in race discrimination, they are violating the Civil Rights of employees and also federal law.  In some cases, if the race discrimination is reported, employers and/or companies may face legal action.
